“Making it make sense”

As humans, we may find ourselves encountering the same or familiar obstacles over and over again, so much so that it can become exhausting and impact our daily functioning. If you are someone looking for help sorting through confusing relationship patterns, repetitive thoughts and behaviors, or even difficulties “letting go” of past events, you have come to the right person!

Derek has a passion for helping clients to clarify and achieve their personal goals through thoughtful integration of lived experiences and present actions/values. Derek primarily uses a psychodynamic approach to counseling. What that term implies most simply is that the things we accumulate across our lifespan tend to subconsciously shape how we conduct ourselves today. Oftentimes, the answers we are looking for to solve current problems can be created by retracing the steps of how we got here!

Derek is a highly analytical person and uses this in the counseling space to offer empathy and careful insight for diverse circumstances. They strongly value cultural responsiveness and love working with trauma, people with disabilities, neurodivergent teens/adults, and LGBTQIA+ individuals. As a member of these groups themself, Derek seeks to empower their clients in making meaning of life’s challenges and accommodating positive steps forward.

Testing/Assessment Services

In addition to psychotherapy, Derek also has several years of experience with clinical/cognitive assessment and serves in this role under psychologists here at the Center for Psychological Health and Wellness. They provide in-person testing for many mental health and neuropsychological conditions, such as anxiety, mood disorders, autism, and ADHD. For more information about the assessment process and how it is structured, please contact the office, and we would be happy to assist in exploring the options available to you.

Derek will be returning to school to complete a Psy.D. in the emphasis area of neuropsychological assessment beginning in the Fall of 2027 with plans to become licensed and practice as a psychologist in the future. They would like you to know this may impact their ability to see clients in-person once that transition happens next year, but they intend to continue seeing people via telehealth at CPHW from that point on!
